چکیده

Introduction Fibularis tertius (FT), formerly known as peroneus tertius is a unique muscle in human being, often considered as a fifth tendon of extensor digitorum longus. The muscle originates from the distal one third or medial fibular surface, anterior surface of the interosseous membrane and anterior crural intermuscular septum. Thereafter, the tendon runs beneath the superior extensor retinaculum, inferior extensor retinaculum and gets inserted into dorsal surface of fifth metatarsal. Fibularis tertius is supplied by deep peroneal nerve and assists in dorsiflexion of foot in swing phase and evertion of foot [1]. Vertullo et al. considered its insertion site as an important factor in case of Jones fracture [2]. A study conducted by Joshi et al. concluded that muscle might remain rudimentary or even absent in 4.4-10% cases in humans [3]. Another similar study carried out on Caucasian population showed its absence in 5-17% of cases studied [4].

Fibularis Tertius Muscle: Cadaveric Study in Indians

Introduction: Fibularis tertius muscle (FTM) is a small, unipennate muscle of the anterior compartment of the leg which is peculiar to human [1]. Usually FTM is considered as a part of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle which arises Background: Fibularis tertius is a small, unipennate muscle of the anterior compartment of the leg which is peculiar to human. It is highly variable muscle....

The Fibularis (Peroneus) Tertius Muscle in Humans: A Meta-Analysis of Anatomical Studies with Clinical and Evolutionary Implications

Being considered an exclusive human structure for a long time, fibularis tertius (FT) is believed to have a secondary function of foot dorsiflexion and eversion. This study is an attempt to approach the issue from an anatomical perspective. A systematic literature search identified 35 studies (7601 legs) which met the inclusion criteria. The weighted results of FT presence were as follows: an "...

Analysis on the Incidence of the Fibularis Quartus Muscle Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Objective. Quantify the presence of the fibularis quartus muscle and correlate it with the individual's sex and concomitant presence of the fibularis tertius muscle. Materials and Methods. We evaluated 211 magnetic resonance examinations (43.13% men and 56.87% women) on the ankle and hindfoot, produced between 2009 and 2011. Results. The fourth fibularis muscle was found to be present in 7.62% ...

Variant insertion of the fibularis tertius muscle is an evidence of the progressive evolutionary adaptation for the bipedal gait

Fibularis tertius (FT) is often considered as part of extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle. The muscle is absent in hominoid apes and with the acquisition of the bipedal gait; the muscle emerged as a recent addition in the human foot. From its various modes of insertions, it is evident that the muscles of the sole are in search of its distal attachment, which can best support the relatively w...

Unilateral absence of an extensor digitorum longus muscle and variations of toe tendons

Introduction During routine dissection in the gross anatomy course, the author was called to confirm the absence of the right extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle in a 49-year-old Caucasian male who died of pneumonia. Once confirmed, the author also noted the left foot had only a single EDL tendon to the fifth toe. Further dissection by the author revealed other tendon variations. During the ...
